Love Conquers All is a collection of Robert Benchley’s short writings – 63 pieces that show Benchley’s humor and wit at their best. The pieces cover a number of topics from book reviews, parodies, how-to tutorials about watching different sports and entertaining sketches about going home for the holidays, to mention just a few.

Though some of the writings may refer to books or events we no longer know about, the humor that infuses Benchley’s writing style is timeless, making the pieces just as funny and relevant now as they were about a hundred years ago when they were written.

The book collects Benchley’s early writings. All the topics he ventures to present to the reader are well-known to him, given his extraordinary, colorful employment history. The Harvard graduate worked for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, then he showed his talent as a sports presenter. From 1914 he was a freelance columnist for the Vanity Fair and a reporter for the Tribune. He started reviewing theater in 1916, first filling in for P. G. Wodehouse, then working full time. He then filled in various positions, including work as the press agent of as Broadway producer, none of which brought major success to Benchley. In 1922 he started acting, being later on hired not only as actor, but as theater writer as well. Later on, Benchley appeared in Hollywood productions, while also working as a columnist for the New York Times.

During his life, Benchley produced more than 600 essays. The short writings included in this collection are certainly among his finest, all hilarious and entertaining, presenting not only the humor style dominant during the first decades of the 20th century, but also Benchley’s criticism of the era – rich and colorful writings inspired from a rich and colorful life.
