Life of St. Vincent de Paul

Description

Also known as the “Great Apostle of Charity,” Saint Vincent de Paul was a French Roman Catholic priest canonized in 1737 for his compassion and actions to serve the poor. In a time when piracy and slavery on the high seas was a commonplace issue that very few people of power addressed appropriately, St. Vincent managed to show humility, and help many convicts who were used as slaves on war galleys.

The Life of St. Vincent de Paul was written by Francis Alice Forbes in the early 1900s as her third biographical work about one the most prestigious saints in history. Also known for writing about the life of Saint Teresa de Avila, Saint Monica and Saint Benedict, she was a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart and a devout, as well as talented religious writer.

St. Vincent had a long and eventful life which began in Gascony, France, in the village of Puoy. Despite a relatively uneventful youth in which he managed to complete his studies and become parish priest in Tilh, St. Vincent de Paul was later captured by pirates on a voyage from Castres to Marseilles, and spent two years in captivity as a slave before returning to France with the help of his third master, a former priest from Nice.

After his return from captivity, however, Vincent was a completely new man whose faith and compassion was only made stronger by the two years of hardship he endured. He went on to organize various religious congregations, fight for the rights and benefit of poor families throughout France, and helped numerous imprisoned galley slaves.

For anyone looking to learn more about the life and remarkable accomplishments of St. Vincent de Paul, this beautifully written biography should be among the first and most authoritative resources to consider reading.
