Richard Harding Davis may be more famous because of his contributions in journalism through covering several wars including the First World War, his short stories and novels have attracted the imagination of many throughout the past century.

Davis was a pioneer in journalism and he documented the Spanish-American War, the Second Boer War as well as the First World War. He is also credited to have boosted the popularity of Theodore Roosevelt who was to become the President of the United States. Davis is also known for promoting the clean shaven look which became popular at the turn of the 20th century.

While he entered obscurity during the 1950s, his writings, and especially his short stories have peaked the interest of many readers. One such story is “In the Fog”. Published in 1901 as a standalone version and then one year later in the compilation Ranson’s Folly, the story depicts and interesting discussion among a few gentlemen who tell of a mysterious murder.

The action takes place in a gentlemen’s club. It is incredibly hard to get access to the club unless you’re someone, and only the finest and most influent get in. Five men are dining at a table, and one of them, Andrew, is soon to speak in the House of Commons to push the Navy Increase bills. He admits to being attracted to mystery and crime novels, and strangely enough one of the other gentlemen starts to tell a story about how he once stumbled through the fog one night only to find a home where two murders have occurred. More strange is that it seemed that the other gentlemen have other details about the crimes, a thing which makes Sir Andrew even more entangled in the story.

“In the Fog” is a masterfully-written story which will keep you guessing until the end, when you might realize that the real track may have been on you.
