Description

A Scottish diplomat and story-teller, John Buchan (1875- 1940) was a British novelist and public servant. He wrote great action novels, including the spy-catching adventures of Richard Hannay, thrillers, historical novels, histories and biographies. In 1979 The John Buchan Societywas founded, to continue his legacy.

A vintage novel, a charming modern fairy-tale with classic plot-elements like the princess, the villain, the poet, the unlikely hero, a fast moving plot, international conspiracies, honor and fair play, “Huntingtower” is a great read for anyone – a quick and easy, yet clever story, offering lots and lots of fun.

It is the story of a respectable Edinburgh grocer, Dickson McCunn, who retires and starts a tour of the Scottish highlands, looking for adventure. He finds himself in the middle of intrigue, makes new and younger allies and is rejuvenated by his involvement with them, trying to free a Russian noblewoman on the run from the Bolsheviks.

Buchan is always great with the descriptive fragments of the countryside. The characters are realistically created, complete with their faults and prejudices. Buchan is a romantic – he has been searching for Romance all his life;the Poet despises Romance. They both discover it, in the form of a modern fairy-tale. Dicksonis surprised to find love as being capricious and terrifying, while Buchan concludes that a life filled with Romance is a hundred times better than a life without it, even if it’s only in a book.

Buchan seems to have this special talent of finding warmth in even the darkest corners of an often harsh and barren land. Through Huntingtower, he has managed to create an excellent adventure novel, full of life and altruistic actions – and, most of all, with brilliantly described characters.
