Henry V by William Shakespeare

Henry V is the final play of a series of three Shakespeare plays about King Henry IV and V. Henry V is one of Shakespeare’s historical plays, and the character is based upon the English King Henry V, who ruled England from 1413 until his death in 1422. The events of the play take place right before and after the Battle of Agincourt, a significant battle fought during the Hundred Years War.

Henry V picks up where Henry IV left off. Prince Hal has given up his childish ways and his friends from the seedy Boar’s Head Tavern, and taken his father’s place as ruler of England. His former reputation means he has a lot to prove to his kingdom.

Conflict ensues when the Dauphin of France sends an insulting message after the young King Henry informs him of England’s possession of certain French territory according of his own distant French relations and ancient land laws. After gaining the support of church and the nobility, Henry decides to invade France.

Meanwhile, right before Henry is about to set off to war with France, he hears of an assassination plot against him. He quickly discovers who the traitors are and does not acquiesce to their appeals for mercy. One of the conspirators is a low-life criminal and former friend of Henry’s. Even so, Henry sentences him to death.

The play follows King Henry as he takes his troops into battle. We also witness how King Henry’s assault against France affects the lower classes as men are torn from their families and thrust into a conflict they know little about.
