Heidi has become one of the most successful children stories and one of the best-selling books ever to be written. Written by the Swiss author Johanna Spyri, the novel depicts a cheerful and joyous girl who learns about life and manages to improve the lives of others around her.

Heidi is a 5 year old girl who has been raised by her aunt Detie due to having lost her parents early. The aunt decides to take Heidi to her paternal grandfather, who lives up in the Swiss Alps. He has secluded himself from both the villagers and God and he doesn’t seem so happy to welcome Heidi at first. However, due to Heidi’s cheerful nature, he starts to care for her even though his affection is reserved. Heidi is also glad to meet Peter the goatherd and his blind grandmother.

After three years, aunt Detie comes to take Heidi to Frankfurt, where she will serve as a companion to Clara, who is bound to a wheelchair. Heidi and Clara become close friends and they do all sorts of funny mishaps which appear to affect the strict housekeeper, Fraulein Rottenmeier, who puts more restrains on Heidi’s life. Heidi becomes pale and less joyful and the house is starting to get haunted by a ghost. Clara’s father and the family doctor soon discover that Heidi is sleepwalking and warns the father that she is to be returned to the mountains, or she will become severely ill.

Heidi returns to her grandfather up in the Alps, where she manages to convince him to reconcile with the villagers and the divinity. She soon manages to help Clara lose the wheelchair and recover, and Clara’s family promises to look after Heidi forever.

Through its innocence and joyful demeanor, Heidi has turned into one of the world’s most loved characters, making Johanna Spyri’s novel a must read.
