Description

The short poem by Mary Kyle Dallas is one of the poet’s pieces about music – a melodic poem that creates a wonderful, serene atmosphere of music, love and simple life.

Mary Kyle Dallas is mostly known as a novelist as well as for her writings about spiritual subjects, mainly for her book published in 1894 and entitled The freed spirit: or glimpses beyond the border; a collection of new and authentic occult tales from the author’s personal experience and reliable private sources, but she was very prolific and appreciated for her writings dealing with subjects other than spirituality and occultism. She wrote comedies, adventure stories and, even more importantly, poetry as well.

Her poems were well-known for the musicality of the verses, several of her pieces being known as songs even today – her poem entitled Brave Love was so much appreciated by famous songwriter and producer Harry Pepper that he wrote music to accompany it. He’d Nothing but His Violin celebrates the beauty of nature and love – the two young lovers in the poem cherish their only possessions, the man his violin, the woman her song and both of them the love they have for each other. The setting depicted is bucolic and idyllic – the sky is blue, the robins are singing, the two young people can eat berries and rest in the hay and the song they sing together is appreciated by the audience that consists of farmers’ wives.

Artistic talent, creativity and the love of music and painting ran in the poet’s family – her father was Joseph Kyle, one of the most celebrated portrait painters of the time. She married another well-known portrait painter, David Dallas, so art was all around Mary Kyle Dallas to inspire her, and she wrote the most beautiful poems about humble life and romance.
