Growing Old

Description

Growing Old is a poem written by Matthew Arnold to share his concerns about becoming old and weak in the future. He delineates on how a person feels if he becomes older, if he grows into a more mature person. The curiosity of what a person would possibly look like when he reaches senility. He wonders if he will no longer be recognized as the man who was once before youthful and full of life. He understands that each one of us if not to die early will experience gray hair, wrinkles, poor eyesight, lack of energy, unable to comprehend things easily, loses his sharp memory, and all things experienced by every elderly person.

He realizes that he cannot do the same tasks as he does when he was still young, as he becomes very fragile and susceptible of illnesses and health disorders. Oftentimes, he seeks aid and assistance from his relatives, if not, he will be placed in a safe haven for the weak and the old. Unfortunate for those who have no families to take care of them. Mostly, people who reached their seniority, opted to be confined in the aforementioned haven. Although some of their families would gladly give support for their grandparents.

The first person awaits of the forthcoming weariness of being closer to breathing his last breath. For some people, because of their difficulties and depressions in life, wished to die sooner, not being able to seek the holy refuge of God Himself.

As for some, they hope for eternal youth, seeking perfection in everyday living such as being healthy by eating a proper diet, exercising, playing sports, getting enough sleep, and other healthy choices.

Matthew Arnold was a British poet and cultural analyst who became an examiner of learning institutes. His father was Thomas Arnold, the successful director of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary educator, and William Delafield Arnold, writer and provincial head.
