Although this book isn’t as popular as Keith Laumer’s other works – particularly the Retief stories – it’s easy to see how underrated it actually is and how much value it can truly offer. This space adventure focuses on the actions of Greylorn, whose crew is attempting to overrun him and stop him from fulfilling his main mission – finding a lost colony and hoping they would be willing to help him save Terra from a terrible danger.

About 90% of the novel is an actual space adventure, so sci-fi fans of the genre will be extremely happy to follow this book’s exciting and dynamic plot, up until an unexpected event helps Greylorn solve one of his problems.

There are many different possibilities as to how this story could unfold, and while being clear that Keith Laumer has analyzed them all before deciding on the ending, you’ll still realize that, despite the somewhat natural consequence of the novel’s completion, it is still quite surprising overall.

Written to captivate and entrance, this novel lacks nothing that could make it a recognized sci-fi classic, despite the fact that it hasn’t really caught on. However, everything from the first appearance of Commander Greylorn to the Epilogue – which ends up revealing some startling information about the story – is carefully calculated in what can be called one of Laumer’s most successful sci-fi stories.
