Description

Graustark is illustrated as a country full of mountains with an area of about 800 square miles. There is, however, one source in the books that determines its site as someplace in the Carpathian Mountains close to Romania. On the contrary, in Graustark it is said to be endangered with a decrease to being only 25 miles wide by 150 miles long and in Truxton King is said to give a shorter rail way to Russian lands in or nearby Afghanistan. Graustark’s capital city, Edelweiss, is reachable by train from Vienna. The mountain township of Ganlook is close to the boundary with Axphain, Graustark’s customary adversary. Graustark is run as a territory and its unit of currency is known as the gavvo, worth $1.40 during the time of the story Truxton King. Graustarkian is the local language of the people, though American English is generally spoken of the well-informed classes and is the daily vernacular of the majestic family and court.

George Barr McCutcheon was an American famous author and dramatist. His most popular books comprise the series of books taking place in Graustark, an unreal East European country, and the book Brewster’s Millions, which was made into a drama and many motion pictures.

George was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. His father, in spite of not having proper education, underlined the importance of literature and urged his sons to also create stories. In his younger days, his father had several jobs that involved travel across the county. George attended at the Purdue University and was a roommate of future wisecracker George Ade. In his college days, he was the editor of the Lafayette Daily Courier and authored a serial book of humor on Wabash River life.

Even though George became popular for the Graustark series, he disliked the classification of being a Romantic and chose to be known as a playwright. George Barr McCutcheon is regarded as apart of the Golden Age of Indiana Literature.
