Freckles is set in the wooded wetlands of Indiana and features as protagonist a young boy who was abandoned as an infant. He reached the age when he can work and he is trying to prove his talent. He finds employment as the guard of the Limberlost, a wetland area rich in vegetation, especially in timber. He finds peace and happiness in the woods and he enjoys the companion of the forest creatures; what’s more, he even finds love, becoming infatuated with a Swamp Angel. Freckles learns to believe in himself, too – in the beginning he is shy and always thinks the worst about himself, but he learns a lot about himself and in the end he is able to see himself more realistically.

Freckles is a moving story about courage, about becoming of age, about friendship and about love, but what really makes it special is the vivid, loving descriptions of the natural environment. Stratton-Porter started her career as a photographer, which explains her different way of seeing and perceiving things, including nature. The values that drive the protagonist, courage, loyalty, goodness, hard work and perseverance are all qualities that are rewarded in the world of the Limberlost, making the novel perfect for young readers just about to learn what life is like and for adult readers as well.

The natural descriptions are very poetic and picturesque, too – being a conservationist who actively supported the preservation of the Limberlost area, the author knew exactly how to describe her beloved wetlands using the most beautiful words and how to make the reader get to love the area as well.
