The main character in the book is one John Fenton, a guy who had a difficult upbringing, but is now established, trying to live a good and stable life. Everything seems to go well until the woman of his dreams appears in his life – a woman wrapped into mystery, prompting Fenton to get involved into strange adventures. The book is an excellent read partly due to its free-flowing and very entertaining style and partly because the plot is full of unexpected turns, making the reader constantly wonder what will happen next. The succession of events is actually confusing even for Fenton who pursues the lady of his dreams and going from one surrealistic situation to the other. It all gets so mysterious and entangled that even the identity of the hero becomes questioned – he may or may not be John Fenton, and the lady he is after may or may not be Belle Charmion.

Find the Woman is a typical example of Burgess’ prose, but it is not what made his name well-known in the first half of the 20th century. After he resigned from his position as a lecturer at Berkley University in 1894, Burgess founded a literary magazine entitled The Lark that quickly became very successful, making the founder’s name known as the poet who wrote The Purple Cow, one of the best examples of non-sense poetry in American literature. Besides novels and poetry, Burgess also short stories, juvenile literature, satires and essays – all of them written in the characteristic witty and playful style that makes any piece by Burgess so much fun to read.
