The story begins with Bathsheba Everdene meeting a young farmer named Gabriel Oak. He is just as his name suggests – stable, noble and strong. He proposes to her yet she refuses because she does not love him. Bathsheba decides to move to a different location where she may find peace.

Gabriel loses his sheep and farm in a tragic fire, and so he seeks employment elsewhere. In his search, he stumbles upon a farm that is burning and helps extinguish the fire. He is then hired, and the employer is none other than Bathsheba who has just recently inherited the farm from her uncle.

Bathsheba is capricious and even her farmhands consider her unworthy of running the farm all by herself. Bored with the quiet life she decides to send a valentine on a whim to a local landlord named Boldwood. He becomes obsessed with her and courts her, yet she won’t hear about marriage.

The third suitor comes in the form of Troy who is a sergeant. He should have married a maid named Fanny after leaver her pregnant yet he proposed to Bathsheba instead. The latter finally accepted, yet fate had reserved a different future.

Eventually the abandoned Fanny dies giving birth, Bathsheba finds about the truth and realized that the marriage is virtually over, Troy disappears, Boldwood courts Bathsheba again and we see an odd justice of fate unfolding.

Far From The Madding Crowd is a novel that will undoubtedly absorb readers, thanks to Thomas Hardy’s narrating style, as well as the triple suitor story that ends in an unexpected way.
