These tales vary from legends for they have no staple statement at the midpoint, from myths for they have no effort to characterize or discuss the intensities or courses of nature, from fairy tales for they do not always take on to the theatrical actors of a dissmilar nature from ours. They take on the entire drama to the fantasy as in “A Child’s Dream of a Star,” “The King of the Golden River,” “Undine,” and “The Snow Image”; but they are not whimsical records of life details, efforts to form those details “to meet the needs of the imagination, the cravings of the heart.” In the outline, those accustomed and sought-after tales which have been retold to kids for countless generations and will be retold to the finality of time. Hamilton Wright Mabie, A.M., L.H.D., LL.D. was an essayist, editor, critic, and lecturer. He was born in Cold Spring, N. Y.. Hamilton was the youngest son of Sarah Colwell Mabie who was from a prestigious Scottish-English family and Levi Jeremiah Mabie, whose forefathers were Scots-Dutch. They were one of the first settlers to New Amsterdam, New Netherland around 1847. Because of trade openings with the inauguration of the Erie Canal his family emigrated to Buffalo, New York when he was a forthcoming pupil. When he was 16 years old, he qualified for his college entrance examination, but expected a year before he enrolled at Williams College in 1867 and the Columbia Law School 1869. He is widely regarded for these quotations: “Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” and “Don’t be afraid of opposition. Remember, a kite rises against, not with the wind.” A few of his works include: Norse Stories, Retold from the Eddas; Nature in New England; My Study Fire; In the Forest of Arden.
