Adolphus Washington Greely was the Chief Signal Officer of the United States Army, an American Polar explorer, and a gold medalist of the Royal Geographical Society and the Geographical Society of Paris. He was from Newburyport, Massachusetts. He started his well-defined military career after the surge of the American Civil War.

As a Polar explorer, Greely commanded the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition on the ship called Proteus. The expedition was supported by Henry W. Howgate, having the intention of setting up one of a chain of meteorological observation stations as the First International Polar Year. The jaunt was also commanded by the United States government to gather astronomical and polar magnetic data. And the expedition longed to search for the lost USS Jeannette in the Arctic.
