Description

A poem concerning about the windy, dark night, entitled as Evening, written by Archibald Lampman. He describes the evening full of cows piling up in the slopes, as nature envelops in its darkness. The fields and meadows are lighted with moon beams, as well as the flowers and trees. The dusky evening is described to be of a moment of solitude. Cool wind embraces and the sound of the crickets and frogs are deafening. The rhythm and melody of the river leave a beautiful sound in one’s ears.

Evening probably implies, the negativities and problems in our lives. It is not at all detrimental and it is considered as challenges one has to face. And how one deals with those with strong faith and belief in God and himself, will overcome every obstacle that comes his way.

Archibald Lampman FRSC was a Canadian poet. He was described as the Canadian Keats and he is possibly the highly notable advocate of the Canadian school of nature poets. The Canadian Encyclopedia defines that he is “generally considered the finest of Canada’s late 19th-century poets in English.”

Lampman is classified as among the Canada’s Confederation Poets, a number of educated poets which also involves Charles G.D. Roberts, Bliss Carman, and Duncan Campbell Scott.

Lampman was described to be of average form and of middle height. He was timid and quiet in some ways, but had an amazing character. Humility and great ambition personified his life and responsibilities.

Archibald Lampman is usually compared with Henry David Thoreau, an American poet. He was born in Ontario and subjected to nature in his childhood life. Lampman was an outstanding student but when he had a rheumatic fever, his health was worsened. He started writing poetry during his years in college, and saw his work appeared in Canadian, American, and British prints. He wrote three books and is honored at present as among Canada’s greatest poets.
