Description

In describing the poem, Evanescence, it speaks of pure bliss, intense brilliance and vivid colors. Indeed, this verse is an expression of beauty and morality. This utters a real and fascinating picture of a very attractive woman but perhaps her beauty fades away as she reveals her nasty attitude to those people who are close to her.

Harriet Elizabeth Prescott Spofford was an outstanding United States poet and story writer commemorated for her novels, poems and mystery books.

She was born in Calais, Maine, Harriet lived together with her parents to Newburyport, Massachusetts, which was her lifelong house, though she had some of her winters in Boston and Washington, D.C. She studied at the Putnam Free School in Newburyport, and Pinkerton Academy in Derry, New Hampshire. At Newburyport her top article on Hamlet was commended by Thomas Wentworth Higginson, who soon became her confidante, and offered her advice and inspiration.

When her parents suffered poor health, she was obligated to work by writing poetry and novels, at times working 15 hours in a day. She wrote to Boston fiction stories for a few earnings. She then proposed to Atlantic Monthly a tale of life in Paris titled In a Cellar. The magazine’s editor, James Russell Lowell, at first thought the tale to be a conversion, and suspended it from distribution. Thankful that it was authentic, he printed it, and it formed her status. She was a much wanted contributor to the key magazines of the U. S., both of literature and verse.

Harriet’s stories had very small with the usual in what was considered a symbol of the New England’s way of thinking. Her gothic love stories were singled out by lavish sketches, and an exceptional control of typecast women of those times. Her works were superlative, full of emotions. In her illustrations and fantasies, she rejoiced in sumptuous joy and the many forms of glory.
