Description

Elizabeth and Her German Garden is a story written by Elizabeth von Arnim which was best known and often republished in the first years of the 20th century. The novel is about a diary written for a year by the heroine Elizabeth about her knowledge in gardening and connecting with her friends. It contains an observation on the loveliness of mother earth and on the community, but is predominantly funny because Elizabeth often commit some errors and her eccentric insight on life. She watched below on the perky trends of her time stating, “I believe all needlework and dressmaking is of the devil, designed to keep women from study.” The narrative is the first in a series of the unchanged heroine. It is notable for being printed without mentioning of the writer.

Elizabeth von Arnim, born as Mary Annette Beauchamp, was an Australian-born British author. Upon marriage, she became Countess Gräfin von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and by her second marriage, Countess Russell. Yet she is known in her younger days as Mary, after the release of her first novel, she was renowned to her fans and to her friends, and lastly also to her family as Elizabeth and she is at present consistently called as Elizabeth von Arnim. She also used the pseudonym Alice Cholmondeley.

She was born in Kirribilli Point, Australia. When she was 3, the family went back to England where she grew up. Her parents were Henry Herron Beauchamp, tradesman, and Elizabeth ‘Louey’ Weiss Lassetter. The novelist had four brothers, a sister, and a cousin from New Zealand, Kathleen Beauchamp, who then married John Middleton Murry and wrote using the fictional name, Katherine Mansfield.

Though she did not write a customary autobiography, All the Dogs of My Life is her story of her care for her pets, includes several glances of the luminous social group of which she was a part of.
