Description

East by West: a Journey in the Recess is a chronicle of English journalist Henry Lucy’s voyages along with his wife in America and on to the Far East throughout the parliamentary interval in 1883.

Volume I consists of his trips in America and in Japan, as well as the Atlantic and Pacific traverses by an ocean liner. While the second volume is about his travels in Japan and India, going home via Aden and the Suez Canal.

The first volume of East by West includes: Off Sandy Hook; New York City; Some Western Towns; Life and Death in the Far West; In the Rocky Mountains; A Mining Camp in the Rocky Mountains; The City of the Saints; The Mormon President at Home; By the Golden Gate; The Labour Question; On the Railway Cars; The Heathen Chinee; Some Japanese Traits; Fete Day at Asakusa; The Mikado’s Birthday Fete; Across Country in Jinrikishas; The Tombs of the Shoguns; Roadside and River; and A Japanese Theatre.

Sir Henry William Lucy JP, was among the ultimately distinguished British political journalists of the Victorian era. He was very famous on all parts of the world. Popular as stern commentator of parliamentary events, he was also a successful comedian, and a parliamentary illustrator-author; widely remarkable as the first finest lobby contributor. To the English and men such as Ernest Shackleton, who titled a summit after him in Antarctica, he was someone to look up to. Yet to New York journalists the Americans considered the British men as a subtle quip. The combined ideas of his actual character has been the project to new biographers to figure out much further.

He was also known for these fictional names: Toby, M.P.; The Member for the Chiltern Hundreds; The Member for Barks; and Baron de Book-Worms.

Some of his works are: Gideon Fleyce; East by West: a journey in the Recess; A Diary Of Two Parliaments: The Disraeli Parliament, 1874-1880; and many others.
