Description
The story of Dot and the Kangaroo by Ethel C. Pedley has been a long time favorite with children in Australia and it has recently become a favorite with kids from all over the world. Its popularity is no surprise – the book can be read, interpreted and enjoyed on so many levels that kids of various ages, even adults can find the book challenging and intriguing. The book is about Dot’s adventures in the Australian bushes and her search for the way home after she had somehow drifted away from her father. On her journey she meets an adorable mother kangaroo who helps her a lot and together they find new friends among the creatures that live in the bushes, such as a kookaburra and a platypus. The book is short, but it lends itself to numerous approaches and interpretations. It can be seen as a heartwarming story for children, but it certainly comes with lots of educative elements and a moral, too. The story is cute, quick paced and exciting. It depicts the world not only from the perspective of humans, but from the point of view of the animals as well, shedding light on the consequences of human behavior over the animal world. Kids who read the story – or get it read to them, depending on their age – can learn about unconditional love and respect for animals, they can experience sadness and they will certainly laugh a lot, too. The language used by Pedley in the book is simple enough, but beautiful, even poetic at times, so it is a great story for parents and grandparents who are looking for a way to make their kids or grandkids enjoy reading.
