Dombey and Son – A Touching Story about Family, Endurance and Friendship

Quite different from works such as Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, Dombey and Son seems to focus more on a long and complex plot in which careful planning and family values are focused on more than adventure or improvisation. Charles Dickens’ Dombey and Son is, nevertheless, considered to be one of the most insightful, brilliant stories that the famed author has written during his long and highly successful career.

Dickens presents us once more with his brilliant writing style and ability to masterfully put together a plot with no lacks or discrepancies to complain about. Although this gem of a novel is seen as a less popular work than many of Charles Dickens’ other novels, it certainly doesn’t lack any of the worthwhile elements we have gotten used to running into from reading his books over the years.

The plot centers around the life of Paul Dombey, whose life gets a turn for the worse when his beloved wife dies during childbirth. However, at the same time, Mr. Dombey also enjoys the birth of his son, whom he lovingly names Paul Dombey Jr.

As the family – of which an important part is Mr. Dombey’s daughter, Florence – tries to continue its life in a harmonious manner, new events constantly shake up the household, such as Paul Dombey’s newfound relationship, and Dombey Junior’s untimely demise. Among the more complex and significant characters of the novel is also Carker, who seems to delight in others’ unhappiness, and even attempts to assault Paul Dombey’s wife later in the story.

Throughout the book, you will find there are plenty of exciting plot twists and unexpected nodes to the story that any Dickens fan will quickly recognize as the mark of the great Victorian author.
