Description

Dick Sands the Boy Captain is one of Jules Verne’s most well-known novels. Dealing with important topics such as the condemnation of slavery and vengeance, this coming-of-age novel has fascinated readers, young and adult alike, since 1878 when it was first published – its story is so packed with action, the nature descriptions are so beautiful that the book is considered to be one of the best by the master of storytelling.

The protagonist and title character of the story is Dick Sands, a teenager working as a sailor on a whale hunter schooner. The ship and its crew has had a very unsuccessful hunting season, so they decide to return to San Francisco. On the way, they save five shipwrecked people and a dog, then they continue their journey. They notice a whale and decide to go after it. Dick is made responsible for the ship, but the odds are against him – the hunting goes wrong and the members of the crew get killed, leaving Dick alone on the ship, with only the five survivors of the shipwreck left alive. He tries to train them to man the ship, but the ship’s cook breaks one of the compasses on the vessel, so now Dick must sail without knowing which way he is heading.

The novel features no scientific discoveries or extraordinary, supernatural journeys, but it does come with powerful moral lessons and amazing descriptions of nature. The story is adventurous and thrilling and the characters are amazing, too, the good ones just as much as the evil ones, making the novel an extraordinary read. However, you must know that Dick Sands is no quick read – you must take your time to explore Verne’s wonderful universe and to enjoy to the fullest the breathtaking sceneries he shows the reader.
