Description

Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was a US doctor, poet, and sage from Boston. He was associated with the literary circle, Fireside Poets, he was attributed by his contemporaries as among the prolific authors of his time. His very popular works of literature are the series of Breakfast-Table, which started with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table. He was also a vital medical activist. Oliver was also an educator, lecturer, and innovator and even though he decided to focus on his literary career, he took up legal studies.

Oliver was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, enrolled at Phillips Academy and Harvard College. After his studies in Harvard, he attended law school briefly before changing courses to medical practice. He started his compositions on poetry at a young age; among his most notable novels, Old Ironsides, and was persuasive in the ultimate conservation of the USS Constitution. After his medical training at the elite learning institutions of Paris, Oliver eventually earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He became a professor at Dartmouth Medical School right before becoming a professor at Harvard and, for some years, worked as a dean there. Throughout his lengthy profession, he was active in distinctive medical reforms and conspicuously postulated the provocative notion that physicians can pass on puerperal fever from every patient. Oliver left Harvard and kept on drafting poetry, fictional books and articles.

He was a member of Boston’s literary circle, which involved Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and James Russell Lowell. He formed an ineradicable inscription on the literary scene of the 19th century. A number of his pieces appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, a magazine that he proposed a title. For his literary accomplishments and other achievements, he was granted innumerable honorary degrees from international universities.
