Deer Godchild – A Set of Genuine Historical Letters That Will Touch Your Heart

When James P. Jackson Jr., an American boy of 12 years of age, heard about the Fatherless Children of France near the end of WWI, his heart was touched, and he very much wanted to become the benefactor of one the those children, and took up work selling newspapers in the New York subway entrance to earn an extra few cents to send to France.

The child who was assigned to him, however, was not at all what James had expected. Speaking poor English and unable to fully understand him, the child, by the name of Andree LeBlanc, soon turned out to be an 11 year old girl whose father had died in the war, and whose brother was still enrolled in the French army.

The story depicted through the Deer Godchild letters captivate through their genuine quality, providing us with a window to the past, showing the world as seen through the eyes of two young children at the end of the first World War. Despite the use of words that are far removed from our time, the letters remain timeless, showing how compassion can transcend cultural and social barriers, and how two children who are complete strangers from one another could bond just through a few letters, over the course of a year.

During the course of the letters, it becomes clear that both children have managed to learn very much from the experience. Even though James felt betrayed at the fact that he was stuck supporting a French girl, when he wanted to befriend a boy instead, he soon grew fond of Andree, and continued his efforts of providing her with aid, even though at times business was bad, and he had to find new ways to earn money.

Deer Godchild is definitely an inspiring depiction of a true story that may seem unlikely at first, but will surprise you through its genuine and powerful message of hope in a world where compassion and understanding were rare.
