Henry Louis Mencken was an American journalist, humorist, cultural critic and scholar of American English. Referred to as the “Sage of Baltimore”, he is considered as among the highly distinguished American authors and fictional stylists of the early 20th century. He remarked largely on the social views, literature, music, outstanding politicians and modern movements. His farcical commentary on the Scopes trial, which he tagged the “Monkey Trial”, also earned him interest.

As an academic, Henry is denoted for The American Language, a many volume report of how the English language is enunciated in America. As an aficionado of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, he was a critic of religion, populism and representative democracy, which he presumed was a structure in which subservient men ruled their leaders. Henry was a promoter of scientific development, unbelieving of economic systems and analytical of osteopathic and chiropractic medicine.
