Description

Cradock Nowell: A Tale of the New Forest is a novel in three volumes written by R. D. Blackmore issued in 1866. Taking place in the New Forest and in London, it ensues the riches of Cradock Nowell who is ousted of his family residence by his father ensuing the mysterious demise of Cradock’s twin brother Clayton. This was Blackmore’s 2nd work, and the book he drafted before his very popular novel Lorna Doone.

Richard Doddridge Blackmore, better known as R. D. Blackmore, was among the most popular English writers of the 2nd part of the 19th century. He was attributed for vibrant exemplifications and characterization of the scenery, keeping with Thomas Hardy a Western England setting and a strong perception of regional background in his writings.

R. D. Blackmore, oftentimes known as the “Last Victorian”, was a forerunner of the movement in literature that pursued with Robert Louis Stevenson and others. He has been illustrated as “proud, shy, reticent, strong-willed, sweet-tempered, and self-centred.” Aside from his novel Lorna Doone, which has experienced ongoing fame, his writing has been out of issuance.

He started his writing career by printing sets of poetry, before switching to writing novels or lengthier stories. His third novel, which was his most famous and highly remarkable, Lorna Doone in 1869, instituted him in the front rank of British writers of his days. With it, he founded a contemporary romantic movement in English fiction. The story’s awesome fame was only tenable when it was seen as the first volume of an edition, as contrary from the unproductive edition in three volumes in which it was firstly printed. Yet, Blackmore was of the outlook that it had become famous rather by chance when a novel critic had wrongly said that the book was of the ancestors of Lord Lorne who had presently wedded Princess Louise.
