Description

Confessions, in Latin: Confessiones, is the title of an autobiography, containing 13 books, by Saint Augustine of Hippo, scribed in Latin. The book details Saint Augustine’s wicked youth and his change of religion to Christianity. The latest English transliterations of it are at times printed with the title The Confessions of Saint Augustine so as to differentiate the work from other works with same titles. Its first title was Confessions in Thirteen Books, and it was written to be read aloud with all works as an entire piece.

Confessions is usually regarded as among Augustine’s eminent works. It is largely ascertained as the primary Western life history ever published, and was an inspiring paradigm for Christian transcribers during the Middle Ages. Professor Henry Chadwick penned that Confessions will “always rank among the great masterpieces of western literature”.

Augustine of Hippo was a North African Christian theologian and philosopher whose works motivated the foundation of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He became the bishop of Hippo Regius in north Africa and is remarked as among the great Church Fathers in Western Christianity for his works in the Patristic Era. Two of his highly influential writings are The City of God and Confessions.

Concurring to his fellow, Jerome, Augustine “established anew the ancient Faith.” In his first years, he was swayed by Manichaeism and then by the neo-Platonism of Plotinus. After he was baptized and converted to Christianity, Augustine furthered his own way to philosophy and theology, compliant in distinct aspects and perceptions. Considering that the Christ’s blessings were essential to human liberation, he led a hand in writing the doctrine of original sin and created formative contributions to the progression of the theory of just war.
