Description

William Bernard Ullathorne was a British patriarch in the Roman Catholic Church throughout the 19th century.

William was born in Pocklington, Yorkshire, the first child of the 10 children of William Ullathorne, a wealthy merchant with fondness in food items, tapestry and liquors and Hannah Longstaff, who became a Roman Catholic when she wedded William. At an early age of 9, Ullathorne’s family moved to Scarborough, where he attended school. He is a progeny of Saint Thomas More through Mary More, his great-grandmother.

He was taught in his father’s office to know more about account management. The purpose was to take him to school, still Ullathorne wanted to explore the waters, and at 15, his parents permitted him make the most voyages to the Baltic and Mediterranean Sea. While hearing Mass in Memelhe, he felt something of an enlightenment, and on his reappearance asked his companion if he had some spiritual books. Ullathorne was given a transliteration of Marsollier’s Life of St Jane Frances de Chantal, which intensified his faith. He went home after his voyage. At 16, he was taken to Downside, nearby Bath, where he was taught by John Bede Polding, the first Archbishop of Sydney, who inspired him so deeply.

Ullathorne entered the Downside Abbey monastery and subsequently took his vows. He was ordained minister, journeyed to New South Wales as vicar-general to Bishop William Placid Morris, whose authority prolonged over his missions in Australia. It was primarily Ullathorne who made Pope Gregory XVI to form the hierarchy in Australia. Ullathorne came back to Britain, encountered Bishop Murphy and took the mission in Australia.
