Adin Ballou was a famous American advocate of pacifism, socialism and abolitionism, and he founded the Hopedale Community in Worcester County. Abolitionism in the United States of America was the movement in the American Civil War to put an end to slavery in the United States and helped them towards obtaining their freedom. He hoped that he could build a utopian community, creating homes for the Hopedale Community members, chapels and factories with a religion inspired town. He would describe this as Practical Christianity but not to the extent that it would be isolated from all of the nearby places. He hoped that it will be a social reform during the American Civil War. The community aimed for temperance, abolitionism, rights of women, spiritualism, and education. Adin Ballou was also a Universalist, among the affiliation of the Universalist Church of America. It was a Christian Universalist religious group in the United States and other associated churches in different other countries. He was born on a farm in Cumberland, Rhode Island to his parents named Ariel and Elida Ballou. He was a Six-Principle Baptist and was converted into a Christian with his family.
