Jacob Abbott was a US author of children’s stories. He was also an educator of mathematics and studied natural philosophy at Amherst College; was a professor at the Hampshire Association; established the Mount Vernon School for Young Ladies in Boston, and was also its administrator. He was cleric of Eliot Congregational Church which he instituted; at Roxbury, Massachusetts; and was, together with his siblings, co-founded the Abbott’s Institute of the Mount Vernon School for Boys, in New York City.

He was a well known author, crafting mostly of children’s stories, short chronicles, devotional texts for every reader, and some informative science books. He created 180 books and collaborated with other authors and edited 31 more. Samuel Phillips Abbott, his brother established the Abbott School.

His Rollo Books, including Rollo at Work, Rollo at Play, Rollo in Europe, among others are the most famous of his works, with protagonists as an evocative young boy and his chums. Jacob rendered his service for about two generations of writing juvenile fiction counter to his peers in England and America who wrote Evenings at Home, The History of Sandford and Merton, and The Parent’s Assistant. The Rollo series, was followed by encouraging his Uncle George to write about books of morals, topography, antiquity and science. He also included in his prose collection twenty-two volumes of historical books and a ten volume set with the title Franconia Stories.
