Voltaire’s Candide – Exploring the Battle between Practicality and Optimism

Considered one of the most remarkable philosophical works of the 18th century, Candide (Candide, ou l’Optimisme) by Voltaire is a timeless book that withstands the test of time by ridiculing some of the most fundamental structures and concepts of human society and civilization at the time, and presenting a practical principle that would be required to replace Leibnizian optimism.

The book itself presents a fast moving, dynamic plot centering around a young man who goes by the name of Candide, and who is depicted as leading an extremely sheltered life in the Garden of Eden, while being taught about the principles of optimism by his mentor.

Like in the better known story about the fall of Eden, Candide soon finds himself falling into a life of disillusion and disappointment, where he has to face the world’s numerous trials and difficulties, experiencing many great hardships.

At the time of its publication, Candide was widely criticized and even banned due to the fact that it basically caricatured religion, governments, armies and modern philosophies, Voltaire majestically wrapping the essential meaning of his statements into allegoric depictions or sarcastic comments. Sexual undertones were also presented within small stories, such as Candide being thrown out of a castle by its owner due to the fond closeness he had developed for his innocent daughter.

It is quite remarkable how the satirical and sarcastic humor, as well as the action comedy depicted in Candide still feels so genuine even 250 years after it was written. The book is not only hilarious, but also offers a dark, blunt and quite beautiful perspective on Voltaire’s philosophy through the practical lessons Candide learns from his own experiences.
