Many of the stories included in this collection are still told and believed among native Americans living on the territory of Canada today. While the folktales included here are recorded and edited quite thoroughly by Cyrus Macmillan to fit in with the views and understanding of his time, they remain a highly valuable part of the heritage left behind by Canadian natives from long ago.

The poetry and mystical qualities of Canada’s past, particularly during and before the period of colonization, are rapidly disappearing today, as they have been since the time when Cyrus Macmillan decided to preserve these tales. Knowing they would eventually be lost to the descendants of the early Canadian settlers, he worked hard to preserve them in a form that would easily be understood by both modern Canadians of all races and cultures.
