James Freeman Clarke was an American theologian and writer. He was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, James Freeman Clarke studied at the Boston Latin School, completed his studies at Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School. Ordained into the Unitarian church he first became an active clergy at Louisville, Kentucky, then a servant state, and thereafter associated himself into the national movement for the abolition of servitude. His gentle theology was uncommon for the traditional town and, allegedly, many women left his first homily. As he corresponded with his well-wisher Margaret Fuller, “I am a broken-winged hawk, seeking to fly at the sun, but fluttering in the dust.”

He later came back to Boston where he and his colleagues founded the Church of the Disciples which had along a group of individuals to pertain the Christian religion to social concerns of that time. Among the aspects that separated his church was James’ conviction that ordination could make no difference between him and them. They also were appointed to be clergies of the highest spiritual life. Of this church, he was the clergy from 1841 until 1850 and again from 1854 up to his departure.
