Description

The Coptic Church acknowledges the Book of Judith as canonical among all Christian Churches. The Church commemorates Judith in the Calendar of Saints on 17th September.

The canonicity of Judith is precluded by the Protestants, who recognize it as the Old Testament to only those texts that are attained in the Jewish canon. Martin Luther scrutinized the book as a parable, but counted it as the first of the eight books in his Apocrypha.

The Douay-Rheims Bible also called as the Rheims-Douai Bible or Douai Bible, or D-R and DV, is a Bible translation from the Latin Vulgate into English composed by the members of the English College, Douai, in the service of the Catholic Church. The section on The New Testament was printed in Reims, France, in 1582, in one volume with lengthy commentary and notes. The section on The Old Testament was printed in two volumes twenty seven years after in 1609 – 1610 by the University of Douai. The first volume includes Genesis through Job, was printed in 1609. The second volume includes Psalms to 2 Maccabees with an additional apocrypha of the Vulgate was printed in 1610. They proposed views on translation issues, and on the Hebrew and Greek reference texts of the Vulgate.

The objective of the version, both the text and notes, was to strengthen the Catholic tradition from the Protestant Reformation which until then had devastatingly subjugated the Elizabethan religion and academic dispute. It was an inspiring determination by the English Catholics to promote the Counter-Reformation. In 1589, William Fulke collected the comprehensive Rheims text and notes in equal columns as that of the Bishops’ Bible. The Bible sold immensely in England, and republished in three more editions to 1633. It was primarily through Fulke’s editions that the Rheims New Testament earned a major impact on the advancement of the English 17th century.
