Description

The Blackfeet were hunters, trekking from one place to another on barefoot. They made use of stone, wood, or bone, wore clothes from animal skins, and stayed in camps protected by pelts. Dogs, their only domesticated animals, were made as creatures of load to bring little bundles and tug weightless piles.

George Bird Grinnell was a U. S. anthropologist, historian, naturalist, and author. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and finished his studies from Yale University with a degree in B.A. in 1870 and a Ph.D. in 1880. Primarily majoring in zoology, he was a notable early conservationist and student of Native American life. George has been remarkable for his encouragement on public opinion and on legislature to conserve the American bison.

George Bird Grinnell had a wide interaction with the environment, animals and Native Americans of the northern savannas, beginning with being part of the final immense hunt of the Pawnee in 1872. He devoted several years studying the natural history of the region. As a former student, he went together with Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s 1874 Black Hills excursion as a naturalist. He flagged a similar engagement to the disastrous and unfortunate 1876 Little Big Horn excursion.
