Bible (ASV) 32: Jonah

Description

Jonah is among the Prophets in the Hebrew Bible. He is a Hebrew prophet, the son of Amittai who is ordered by God to send the message of the prediction of the havoc of Nineveh but Jonah tries to get away with his religious responsibility and disobeys God. He is forthrightly punished by God and Jonah sought penitence and renewed himself by finally completing his mission. Nineveh called as the great city where Jonah went to preach was the capital of the historical Assyrian kingdom, which was conquered by the Babylonians and the Medes. The name Jonah means dove as opened in the first verse.

The Revised Version, Standard American Edition of the Bible, simply known as the American Standard Version (ASV), is a Bible translation into English language that was finished in 1901, with the production of the revision of the Old Testament; the revised New Testament had been published in 1900. It was originally noted by its complete title, but have other names, as the American Revised Version, the American Standard Revision, the American Standard Revised Bible, and the American Standard Edition. When its copyright was extended in 1929, it had come to be known as, the American Standard Version. Because of its distinction in seminaries, it was in the United States to sometimes call as the “Standard Bible”.

The American Standard Version, also known as The American Revision of 1901, started in 1870 to revise the Authorized Version or King James Bible of 1611. This work of revision gradually drafted the Revised Version (RV). American religious leaders for scholars were sent requests to lend a hand on the RV assignment. In 1871, thirty scholars were selected by Philip Schaff. The religious creed designated on the American committee were the Baptist, Congregationalist, Dutch Reformed, Friends, Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Protestant Episcopal, and Unitarian. These scholars started their project in 1872.
