Description

Captain Gilbert seemed skeptical about Manton’s real identity as he observed through the table. The illumination in the small room was bad, and the Captain’s reaction was of serious curiosity and confusion.

Then the man at the far side of the table assured the Captain that he was indeed John Manton. John was among the many recruits who had that day introduced themselves at the Ryde Recruiting Office. 26-year-old John is a tall, composed man with dark hair, a pair of blue eyes, tight lips and looks so energetic, in spite of the reality that he looks rather expressionless. He had himself on a well-polished blue serge ensemble, obviously unsuitable for that instance. His bowler hat, too, had been used for a very long time.

Captain Gilbert, remained observing him, got a slip of paper and pen. He noted that he would like to see John Manton after office hours. John confirmed to meet the Captain after the office closes at around eight in the evening. The Captain told John to wait for him outside the office. Then he resumed working and called on the next recruit.

Meanwhile, John strolled along the streets, thinking about his private meeting with Captain Gilbert. He was wondering what the Captain requires of him. Probably the Captain knew that he served in the army in the past and thought that that is the reason why Captain Gilbert wants to talk to him. He assured himself that if he will not be enlisted, then he will just have to join some other services. It was finally eight o’ clock and John stood at the office waiting for Captain Gilbert. The Captain hurriedly prepared himself to meet John. When he approached him outside, the Captain led John to the quieter side of the street. Captain Gilbert suddenly called John as Bernard Treves and John had no idea who that person is but the Captain did not believe him. The Captain knew that Bernard is only pretending to be someone he is not.
