Description

At the Earth’s Core is part of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Pellucidar Series. Published in 1914, the novel is the first in the series and it appeared in four installments in All-Story Weekly, one of the most popular and most prestigious pulp magazines at the beginning of the 20th century and it came out in book form in 1922.

The story features David Innes as its protagonist, the hero who keeps the story going in all novels in the Pellucidar Series. Innes inherits a mine and he finances the development of an excavation machine. At the test drive Innes and his companion, the inventor of the machine Abner Perry discover that the machine cannot turn. They keep it moving and the iron mole – that’s the name of the machine – goes 500 miles deep under the crust of the Earth, where the two explorers find Pellucidar, the world inside the hollow shell we know as Earth and a sophisticated civilization, as well as prehistoric creatures including dinosaurs, saber-toothed tigers, mammoths and almost-humans inhabiting it.

The two travelers get completely absorbed in the magical, but often cruel world of the Pellucidar – they go through all sorts of adventures, some of them dangerous, others romantic, but all of them fascinating. They are so much attracted to the under-crust universe that, after they return to the surface, they decide to fix the iron mole to return to the world under the crust.

Like in the other stories belonging to the series – and like in all stories by Burroughs, as a matter of fact – the action is quickly paced. However, what is the most fascinating in the novel is the description of the imaginary landscape found by the hero under the surface and imaginary creatures that populate the special world – if you are looking for a book that helps you detach yourself completely from your day to day life, you have found it.
