An International Episode is the story of Henry James’ two young protagonists – a young British man who follows all the rules, and an American girl with a rebellious heart – who attempt to play their roles as best as they can, while still remaining the “slaves” of the social norms they grew up with. While the younger gentleman finds himself bogged down by the mores of British society as they stand as an obstacle between the two, his female companion seems to have a strong desire to break and overlook nearly all the rules.

Although we are not faced with a tragic tale, the consequences of the characters’ respective philosophies will be more than enough to make readers think. Is the blunt and unruly American way of life truly as free as it attempts to be? Is it worth following unspoken rules that are strict enough to keep European society in line when it means giving up the valuable things your heart guides you to? Maybe not even James himself has the answer, though he certainly gives it his best attempt in this heartfelt, yet thought-provoking novel.
