Description

When a stranger takes up a job working for Orlov, local St. Petersburg playboy and son of a rich and influential political figure, readers can already assume that the story is about to take a well-known path descending into a struggle of political idealism and the conflict between completing one’s mission and taking a wiser stance when approaching the problem at hand.

In some ways, that is precisely what Anton Chekhov’s An Anonymous Story is about; however, with a beautiful young woman involved in the plot, it becomes increasingly more difficult for our main protagonist to even place his mission in the foreground any longer.

The story is an insightful and elegantly written tale of political intrigue, love and abandonment. Our anonymous hero goes through a complete metamorphosis as a character, shifting from the unscrupulous political activist to a kind man who is unafraid to leave behind the chessboard of politics in favor of helping a young damsel. Will he succeed? And where does his road take him once the woman he tries to help learns of his true intentions?

Anton Chekhov (1860 – 1904) is considered one of the most skilled and influential authors of short story fiction who ever lived. His remarkably insightful stories have inspired generations of writers, and his plays are still performed and studied at major theaters and acting schools today.

Chekhov’s style and his extensive knowledge and mastery of several Russian literary themes that can be found throughout this story will become apparent even after just reading through few pages. Moreover, Chekhov’s own philosophical beliefs and depth becomes readily apparent through the actions and events of his unknown political activist turned hero.
