Aircraft and Submarines is a book written by illustrious American writer Willis J. Abbot in 1918, and it deals with precisely this topic. The book shows in detail how the worldwide technological progress brought about by submarines and airplanes paved the way to destruction on a much larger scale than what was achieved, for example, during the American Civil War.

Abbot’s book is extremely informative, especially for those interested in the history of the early 20th century, the Great War and advancements in aircraft technology. The author spends a great deal of time on the latter, documenting the history of flight from hot air balloons to the most advanced aircraft employed in the war.

The history of the submarine is equally interesting, and the author’s research is extensive in this area as well. The book shows how even during the time of George Washington plans were made for underwater machines, and the earliest submarine designs were clearly meant for gaining an advantage during wars.

Willis J. Abbot (1863 – 1934) was an American journalist and prolific author, focusing mainly on themes regarding navy and army warfare, marine merchant stories, as well as historic wars. He wrote numerous books about marine corps and the history of war throughout the late 1800s. Some of his best known books are The Story of Our Navy,The Nations at War and The Story of Our Army.
