Agricola

On the Life and Character of Julius Agricola, by its complete name, is an extensive piece of historic literature written by renowned Roman historian and senator, Publius Cornelius Tacitus (56 – 117). The book contains a detailed account of the life of Tacitus’ father-in-law, Agricola, who was an important Roman General responsible for many of the Roman conquests in Britain.

The work is similar to Tacitus’ Germania, where the illustrious historian conveys the history of the central European region where many of the Germanic people that Rome had dealings with resided. In the Agricola, the author focuses mainly on the life and accomplishments of General Agricola, however, he places special emphasis on Agricola’s campaigns in Britain, while speaking at length about the Britons’ way of life.

As with the Germania, the Agricola presents the natives of the land as being far more free and peaceful, in great contrast with life as it was in the Roman Empire. The book contains strong polemics against the politics and tyrannical rule of Rome, as Tacitus engages in attacks against the greed and aggression that the Roman Empire was known for.

As for Agricola himself, we find out a great deal about the beginning of his military career – started in Britain itself – and his brilliant military career that saw him ascend from one position to the other until reaching the rank of General. His strong support of Vespasian was considered one of his most inspired political moves, as it led to Agricola’s career reaching it speak when Vespasian became emperor and 69 AD, and Agricola was awarded the command of the Britain campaign.

After his military career ended,Agricola remained in high standing as a patrician and governor of Gallia Aquitania. He was later made consul and governor of Britannia as well.
