Description

The works of Anna Katharine Green have literally shaped the modern detective novel, giving it the familiar form we know today, while also providing it with its own characteristic American charm. Aside from well-known novels such as The Step on the Stair, A Strange Disappearance or The Leavenworth Case, Agatha Webb is one of Ms. Green’s most impressive and well-written publications.

A wealthy woman who was quite well-regarded by the people from the community she lived in is suddenly killed due to a stab wound inflicted by a dagger. One of her servants also dies shortly thereafter because of a heart attack – likely from the shock of discovering the murder. Not everything is as it seems, however, as a thrilling and twisty plot unfolds, leading to a story that will impress you through its intricacies.

Even though the characters in Agatha Webb knew each other quite well, we are slowly exposed to more and more bewildering developments that shed light on their true intentions and hidden qualities. The complexity of the plot and the believability of the protagonists involved are a testament to why Anna Katharine Green was considered the “mother” of the modern detective novel.

Although her work predated that of Arthur Conan Doyle and many other illustrious authors of detective novels that followed, the author proves that she is capable of creating a fascinating world filled with intricate and unexpected twists that will keep readers at the edge of their seats.

The story itself is impressive enough, but Green’s style also makes for a very readable and enjoyable narrative. You will be taken through clearly depicted plot developments that work to contour a puzzle you won’t find to be easy to solve. Also, the genuine descriptions and remarks make the novel historically accurate, and allow modern day readers to feel like they are actually living the events along with the protagonists, in 19th century Massachusetts.
