Description

Aesop’s Fables are a collection of tales describing animals, people and various mythical creatures in specific situations designed to convey an important lesson or moral. The value of the many truths told by these stories is immeasurable, and their origins go further back than almost any other relevant work of literature in history.

This last of the 12 volumes that comprise Aesop’s 284-fable collection contains the last nine of the stories, including titles such as The Hawk, The Kite and the Pigeons, The Woman and the Farmer or The Swallow and the Crow.

In The Hunter and the Horseman, a man catches a large hare, and is tricked by a horseman who steals his prize. How will the hunter reconcile with what happened? Another interesting story is that of The Swallow and the Crow, which points out the humorous fallacies of a boastful swallow who claims she used to be a princess.

These short tales speak not only about the wisdom of farmers and the people of the land as they were in the time of Aesop, but also of the ancient cultures from which the stories had sprang. Aesop was merely responsible for being the first to collect these stories, but his role in writing them was simply that of a chronicler or a scribe.

The wisdom contained in the tales, as well as the clever, simple, entertaining and oftentimes funny form in which they are presented, are mainly a result of generations of people adding their own versions and ideals to them, based on their unique intelligence and understanding of life.

These fables will delight and surprise you in many ways, and you will not be able to stop until you finish going through all of them. Even though they were first written over 2,500 years ago, they still carry many of the same moral lessons that we struggle with today.
