According to many experts, the one who initially collected all these stories, Aesop, may never have existed. Details regarding his life were taken from the indications of famed Greek scholars such as Herodotus or Aristotle, but none of his writings survived, and even his origins in Sardis or his association with the kings and leaders that he became the adviser of later in his life cannot be traced with good enough accuracy.

Was Aesop real, or was he just a myth? While not all scholars share the view on this matter, one fact is certain: the messages of his stories are as real, helpful and eye-opening today as they might have been to those reading them over two millennia ago, despite all the advanced growth in social complexity or technology that our civilization may have gone through.
