Adam and Eve

Description

Although it was written nearly 10 years earlier, John Milton’s epic poem, Paradise Lost, was only published in 1667, with a second edition on its way to seeing the light of day almost another decade later, in 1674. Adam and Eve is essentially the story of Adam and Eve from Genesis, however, it is presented in Milton’s blank verse and his characteristic style which shows a widely different portrayal of the creation of Eve, Satan and the original sin – all core concepts of Christianity to this day.

We are brought to witness the interesting conversations between God and Adam while Adam asked his Creator to provide him with a companion, and between Eve, Adam and later Satan. These conversations convey Milton’s thoughts on Eve’s curiosity and thirst for knowledge, as well as Adam’s indecision in following her lead, as both participants ultimately choose to defy their Maker.

John Milton (1608 – 1674) was one of the most famous English poets, polemicists and authors of his time. He was a civil servant under Oliver Cromwell, and he was responsible for the creation of several important texts that have established the foundation of English literature during its formative years.

Milton was influenced by many political, historical and religious changes throughout his life and career in Stuart Britain. Although he began working on his poetry early, at first it was merely for private circulation. Later, after Milton became an official placed in public office in service of the Commonwealth of England, he had the chance to continue his career as a poet as well. He finished most of his lyrical works after the Restoration of 1660, which had left Milton completely blind so that most of his poetry – including Paradise Lost – were spoken by the great poet, and then transcribed.
