Still known today as the “Prince of Preachers,” Charles H. Spurgeon (1834 – 1892) was a Reformed British Baptist preacher who became one of the leading figures of the British Baptist church during the mid-1800s. Spurgeon had a charity organization known as Spurgeon’s, and he was also a skilled author, having written numerous prayer books, commentaries, sermons and an extensive autobiography.

According to Promise is one of Spurgeon’s most well-known publications – a book that urges doctrinal followers to live in accordance with the promises made by God to His most devout believers. When praying, for instance, Spurgeon implies that one should be bold and expect God to answer. Also, discipline, learning, studying and reading the scriptures, as well as evangelizing should be done with greater passion and trust in God’s ability and willingness to keep to His promises.

The book goes to great lengths in trying to define the ideal path, attempting even from the start to compare Christians to non-believers in an effort to define a clear distinction and point out the differences between the two.

Spurgeon also attempts to solve the many dilemmas that Christians in his day – and many still in this day and age – had about issues regarding following the law versus following Christ, or about the plan of salvation that God has for humanity.

Spurgeon was an author who tirelessly worked to get his point across and attempt to educate, encourage and inspire his readership. Aside from his books and sermons, he also wrote hymns and even entire collections of worship songs such as his widely successful 1866 book, Our Own Hymn Book.

Any Christian who wants to understand the plan of God at a deeper level, and rekindle the fire of their faith by reading a book that explains with great clarity and passion the beliefs of the Baptist Church as they were defined in the mid-19th century.
