Description

If you are interested in travelogues that take you to exotic places and are written in an engaging style that captivates your interest from the first page to the last, A Thousand Miles up the Nile will surely win your appreciation. Written by one of the most celebrated novelists and journalists of the second half of the 19th century, the book describes Edwards’ journey up the river Nile undertaken in 1873-74.

Edwards toured Egypt in the company of some friends – a journey she describes in great detail and in vivid colors in her travelogue published only a few years after her return from Egypt in 1877. The itinerary of the journey – the approximately 1,000 miles between Alexandria and the Second Cataract of the Nile – is varied, giving the writer plenty of opportunity to observe local culture, customs and people. Her fascination with the extraordinary world she finds in Egypt is obvious from the first page, but she soon becomes aware of the threats that the ancient monuments of Egypt are exposed to. The book offers a travel account written with the skill of an excellent novelist – we have descriptions of interesting characters that Edwards and her group meet during the journey, and we are also offered great history lessons while reading the descriptions of the monuments visited.

This book has certainly arisen the interest in Egyptology of many readers and will continue to do so with future readers as well. The prose is wonderful, one of the best examples of 19th century literature, the descriptions are engaging, entertaining and educative at the same time, so if you like reading about journeys and you love quick-paced, yet contemplative writing, A Thousand Miles up the Nile by Amelia B. Edwards is the right book for you.
