Description

A Girl of the Limberlost is a story by the American author and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter. This was first printed in August 1909. It is deemed as a masterpiece of Indiana collected works. It is the second to her first story Freckles.

The tale is set in Indiana, in and round the Limberlost Swamp. Yet during that instance, this extraordinary marshland region was being lessened by extreme logging, natural oil extraction and seepage for agriculture. The marshland and forest gradually came to an end, although developments from the 1990s have started to bring back a little part of it.

Patricia Raub, a Senior Lecturer of American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston, remarks that Gene Stratton-Porter was “one of the most popular woman novelists of the era, who was known for her nature books and her editorials on McCall’s ‘Gene Stratton-Porter Page’ as well as for her novels.” Patricia notes, “At the time of her death in 1924, more than ten million copies of her books had been sold – and four more books were published after her death.”

Gene Stratton-Porter whose real name was Geneva Grace Stratton, was an American writer, one of the first naturalists, and nature photographer. She used her profession and money as a renowned writer to promote the conservation of Limberlost Swamp and other marshlands in the state of Indiana. She authored many famous books and conventional columns in national magazines, including McCall’s. Her writings were interpreted into many dialects, as well as Braille, and Gene have had an approximate of 50 million readers all throughout the world. Her story, A Girl of the Limberlost, was made four times into a movie adaptation, and the life story of Gene Stratton-Porter herself was created as a one-woman act, A Song of the Wilderness by dramatist and actor Larry Gard for his wife, actress Marcia Quick.
