Description

A Dream Play was published in 1901 by August Strindberg. It was first shown in Stockholm in 1907. It continues to be the playwright’s one of the highly adored and inspirational plays, viewed as a significant forerunner to dramatic Expressionism and Surrealism.

The play focuses on the main character, Agnes, a daughter of the Vedic god Indra. She comes down to the world of humans to sought their issues. She encounters over 40 characters, a few of them have an apparent allegorical value like the four leads including theology, philosophy, medicine and law. When she undertakes all types of human sacrifices such as poverty, trouble, and the daily tasks of the family, the daughter of the high being experiences a somewhat hectic life while on Earth and commented that all humans are full of sufferings. Eventually, she goes upwards to the Heaven and this experience is in consonance to the waking up from a dream full of series of events.

Johan August Strindberg was a dramatist, author, poet, essayist and painter from Sweden. He was a well-recognized author who frequently gets his ideas from his life experiences, his literary career spontaneously lasted for four decades, and he had written more than 60 plays and over 30 texts of fiction, autobiography, history, cultural analysis, and politics. He was an established adventurer and cynic all throughout, he discovered a variety of play methods and strategies, from naturalistic tragedy, monodrama, and history plays, to his apprehension of stylish and dreamlike dramatic methods.
